Cool. I may just buy a trans temp gauge and monitor the temp while in-line and stand alone.

If you install a Temp gauge Sensor/Sender on the Trans line out to Cooler it will read a higher temp than a Sensor mounted in the pan. The fluid in the line out to the Cooler comes straight out of the Torque Converter so it contains Trans heat & heat produced by the Converter. Pan fluid temp gives a better idea of what's happening inside the Trans. You could install both if you're picky. :D

I'm using a tube/fin type in front of my radiator and the trans has never hit 200 deg.

This is a heavy car with a PG, 3.90 rear, and a 4500-5000 stall converter. It does not have a seperate fan and has never been a problem.

When I had a t-350 I was just going to use the a/c condenser for my transmission cooler, then found out that too cool is just as bad as too hot. So when my transmission went belly up I went to a stick, no cooler needed :D If I still had an auto, I'd use the factory radiator cooler AND a small external cooler. I like the the tube and fin design, because the plate system MUST be REPLACED if your trans fails. They CANNOT be cleaned and reused unlike the tube and fin design...

Tube type are easier to clean, stacked plate type can be cleaned but take more time. A pulsating/pressure type flusher works best.
