Get a newer style cs alt. It will come in as soon as it's spinning and gets a draw. That old one you have needs at least 2k rpm to work. So if you don't have a 6" crank pulley your not charging until you go down the track. Slap a volt meter on it and watch it.

As far as the Red tops shooting craps I don't believe it. Those things have a 6 year warranty.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does "CS" stand for? Are they a single wire alt.?

i run a yellow top out back with a 120 amp alternator. love it.
i had my alternator go out. and drove it 20something miles with ls1 fans and 8" fan on the trans cooler. stereo bumpin. aeromotive fuel pump..made it back home still with a cool engine and about 10.9 volts. id say it held up half way decent.
