How many different sizes are there? I'm thinking someday down the road I might get something like a B-Body 8.5" and have it shortened to a stock G-Body width. Are there differences in axle bearing (not carrier/pinion) sizes?

Well that may not be a good idea as the larger bearing will end up being categorized as a truck axle and be more money in the custom c-clip axle world.

There are NO short axles with the larger bearing from GM. 30 3/8" is as short as they come.

So if your going to shorten a rear and buy aftermarket axles you might as well do the ford bolt in bearing with a GM mid size car flange 7900 Moser part number. Then you will have the best for drag race and street duty also.

IF your not going with more 11.99 et car then just stick with the c-clip 1.40 axle bearing surface ...It will be MORE than strong enough for the job and if you do go faster you can just lob off the ends of the housing and c-clip elim kit the rear.

PLUS these axles at off the shelf axles 28 or 30 spline from Moser and will only cost 250.00 Jim

A 12 bolt car and a 8.5 from a 71 to the time the went to a 7.5 Nova use the same wheel bearings. I have taken alot of Impala housings cut them down and used the nova ends on them. I think even the 8.2 10 bolt uses the same wheel bearing. Is the angle of the top arms the same on the Impala rear 70-71 as a Chevelle or ? There should be plenty of them around. May be a cheap 12 bolt I have bought a bunch of Impala 12 bolts for $100-$150

Well, I recall someone (has an orange-ish street-driven wagon with an LS motor) said he drilled out the 2nd hole in stock upper arms to correct pinion angle and that was about it as far as adapting goes (probably need to relocate the spring perches also), but for the price I'd pay for a semi-local G-Body 8.5 (timing is everything, and I'm nowhere near needing one, not for quite some time) I could probably buy a B-Body 8.5 (~$250+ around here) & have it shortened.

How much more would a shortened axle like that run... for the larger axle I mean? The reason I considered it is because of the larger bearing and larger diameter axle, I recalled reading they could be shortened and re-splined. If that's the case, I figure after all is said & done I'd have a pretty bulletproof 8.5 with 30-spline axles (although I don't know all the ins & outs of rears, 30 is better than 28 or 26, and a thicker axleshaft is better, correct?), probably a support cover, and a good posi unit.

Old stock axles are junk. HArdly any one resplines axles any more. The price of shipping to the shop (moser) then the respline price and then the shipping back your pretty much at the price of a aftermarket c-clip alloy axle pair...lol. The alloys they use in the aftermarket axles are far superior to stock cast axles.

To save 50.00 it is just not worth the effort. :)

I have a friend that still has big c-body mopar axle cut resplined for Mopar stuff but a bolt in axle is a custom axles and will cost 345.00 + shipping compared to a c-clip axle being from 199-249.00 + shipping depending on where you buy the parts.

looks like resplining is 100.00 from moser and then shipping from IN to OH is 25.00 and back is 25.00 so you have 150.00 right there. Then you had to initial buy the rear 250.00
400.00 so far.... gears 150.00 bearings 100.00 posi ( used 100-250 depending on type) narrow the housing local 100-150
blast the housing paint 30-70 ish

Numbers, numbers... numbers...

The resplining I was talking about was on new axles. If I bought one of these rears & had them shortened I'd be using new aftermarket axles from the start.

You can buy what ever axle you can think up in the aftermarket...lol. BUT if you can keep the length to a stock 28 7/16 " axle and a stock off the shelf spline count like 28 or 30 you can get them pretty reasonable. Jim
