what kind of 60 ft. time will 8.5 survive?

I have a 80 malibu that I am building with my 16 yo son. Original plan was a small block. We basically stumbled across a gn rear, so we got it and threw out the 7.5 things escalated out of control as usual, now we are going to be powered by a big block, making more power than we originally planned for. I'm sure we need c-clip elimanators and aftermarket axles now. Being on a budget, this will probably prevent it from running this summer. I was just wondering what the 8.5 will take on stock axles in case we can't wait.

We only have 1/8 mile tracks in immediate area. hoping for some mid to high 6's in 1/8. Will the stock axles handle 1.30 60 ft. range. Was thinking of getting some aftermarket, but hate to do that and then have to replace them again when we get to
the c-clip elimators.

I broke a stock 30 spline 12 bolt axle with my mild 383 and 150 shot. So I would say no for stock 8.5 axles.

if your gonna go fast, get c clip eliminators ! not having a broken neck is a good thing!

Final note maybe -

IF you are racing and c-clip eliminating ...is this car going to be street bound or just a track car?

IF still street bound and using a posi Upgrade to the 30 spline Moser / aftermarket alloy and double think the c-clip elim IF your car does 50%- 75% street.

IF you are just drag racing 75% -100% then elim kit the rear and FULL spool it with 30 spline or 33 with full 33 spline spool .

Elim kits really are not made much for street duty as they are a sealed ball bearing and housing in a Aluminum block system. NOT the greatest for street duty even the Strange STREET elim kit which used tapered bearing system...

Just some extra thought and info to chew on before the decision. :) Take care, Jim J D

Thanks Jim,

It will be on the street less than 50%. I'm leaning toward the strange setup with the tapered bearings.
