My fuel gauge goes nutty

My fuel gauge goes nutty almost everytime I turn the ignition on. Can someone help. I've been told several things that could be the problem, a short or the sending unit in the tank.

If this the case where is a good place to buy 1 without paying an arm & a leg.

generally its a ground. If it goes to full its missing a ground connection
