I'm having problems with my emergency brake release handle on my 78 El Camino. When I pull it, the whole thing comes out through the dash. Is there supposed to be a clip that holds the doughnut in its bracket?
no clip, the part of the handle that houses the inner has two fingers on the outside that snap out after it's pushed through the hole in the dash.if one of them is broken it won't stay in place.if t's broken you could a hose clamp on it to stop it from pulling through.
The fingers are fine. A hole has worn to the left, which makes the hole bigger. When the handle comes out it comes undone, so it all comes out. The plastic doughnut won't stay in its bracket either. I'm trying to keep from making the hole in the dash bigger.
I finally got it to not fall out of the dash when I pull the handle. I held a body shim inside the dash, while my wife pushed the handle through it. Time will tell how long it will work.
