torque converter ?

pulled my 350 chevy trans took down the torque converter and very little trans fluid came out. its a 3200 for a 461 bb with 342 r end. how much fluid should be in there/ what could cause this? thanks

the converter will hold fluid in unless u drill a hole in the front (part closest to the flywheel) but i would let a converter shop do it so you dont drill thru the turbin inside.

well depending on how long you let your car sit before you pulled the trans out and then pulled the converter out of it will determine how much fluid is gonna be in the converter. theirs this thing called drain back, if it sits over night the converter will be half full. if you started it up, moved it, then pulled it, it would be full. a converter will never go under 1/2 full of fluid. if you did somehow decide to drill a hole in it to drain the fluid. your best bet would be to drill it in the side midway between the weld in the middle and the back side of the converter where it turns to go up to the pilot. not in the back or the front. the back (where it sits flush on the flywheel) has a disc that rides that wall and the other side has fins.
