I understand the gearing diffs b/w these two trannys. I know there are advantages to overdrive, and I know that 350s are cheaper.

I wonder if anyone has some real-world experience comparing the ability of each of these to handle torque. I am putting down nearly 450 ft lbs and have already chewed up two stock 700s.

IIRC, the 200R4's are being built stronger then the 700's these days. IDK If either one is stronger than a TH 350.

I know of a 700R4 behind a 454 stock big block that lives like it belongs there. Of course the owner knows that the BBC torque could destroy that transmission if he abused it. The 700 replaced a TH400. If you buy a 87 or newer 700, it is supposed to be better than the earlier 700s. They can also be modified to Corvette performance, which is a pretty stout SB...

I have been using late 700s from 1991 and 1992 (they are called 4L60) these are the latest ones before GM switched to electronic control. I knew the early 700s had fewer splines on the input shaft.

I think a 350 and 700 could be built similarly. There are a lot of places advertising builds capable of 600hp.

if i was really looking to put an OD transmission in something with a little power, id for sure do a 4l80e, granted its gonna cost ya more to have done, plus the controller, but your gonna be way ahead, the 80e transmission is tough.

as far as the th350 vs 700r4, the th350 will be stronger for less money, the 700r4 will be strong but is gonna take some money to get it there. IMO id build a nice th350 and probably put a around a 3.42 gear in it for some decent mileage if thats what your after

The 700 can be made to live. I have one behind my 6.0 LS in my 73 Camaro, which is pushing 500HP. Just need to upgrade a few of the hard parts, put good clutches in it . You can build a 350 to handle power for cheaper, but its nice having a mid 11 sec car that can criuse on the interstate. I have knocked down 21 MPG to boot ( if you can keep your foot out of it).
