Once again, I need your expertise.

I have a Muncie in my Malibu right not, but I've been on a look out for a used Richmond 5 speed OVERDRIVE.

My question is, how would I be able to tell from outside whether it's just a regular Richmond 5 speed or an OVERDIVE one? Any specific numbers on housing? Any other clues?

Thank you, as always.

P.S. Does anyone know where to get one? Prefer one that needs to be rebuilt.

The last time I checked, the Richmond 5 speed is not overdriven, but the Richmond 6 speed is overdriven.

Did Richmond redesign their 5 speed for overdrive? I haven't looked at them for some time.

Yes, richmond makes one transmission with 1:1 5th gear and another one with 0.77:1 5th gear.

If you put the shifter into 5th gear and turn the input shaft, the output shaft will turn faster than the input shaft if it is an OD gear.

Or looking at it the other way around, the output shaft will turn one rotation when the input shaft turns 0.77 rotation.

You can get a Muncie based Auto Gear Equipment M21 Y 4 speed that has a .85 OD & is MUCH stronger than the Richmond if all you're looking for is a little better highway ratio. IIRC, they'll sell you the gearset separately, too, if you're into doing your own trannies.

if you want the overdrive why not get the T-56

with this adaptor plate you can get a LS1 style (camaro/firebird) T-56 and use all your existing linkage, bell, pedal, etc.

:-k I don't know...

Are there any cons? What do I need to modify to make it fit? Where is that adaptor plate obtainable? What is the good place to get a T56?

I guess with T56 I can easily go to 4.11s dancin_banana.gif

to answer your question though the normal 5 speed case is 16.5 inches from faceplate to trans mount and the 5 speed OD is 18 inches from faceplate to trans mount.

Forget about my question now, you got me all happy about 6-speed. LOL. I'm already thinking 4.11s and nice cruising on the highway. Any specific T56s I should be looking for? What shifter? If you find anything on EBay or Craigslist that would grab your attention, send it my way.
