Ok guys, just got the car back from the exhaust shop yesterday so my motivation is currently pretty high. 8)

I need to get this HVAC control mounted back in. I acquired the car in pieces so I get to figure this out.

What's missing here? I'm trying to mount the HVAC to nothing? I know I'm missing the stereo mount panel but it looks like I'm also missing something else. Does anyone have any photos of this going back together?

the heater control uses screws to mount it directly to the dash there is no bracket.

you are also missing the radio mounting plate for the 2 post style radio.

Awesome Turna, thanks for the reply.

What about the upper right two screws for the lighter and heater controls? Do they just screw together somehow? I'll have to pick up that radio mount plate on Ebay I guess.

What is the common fix to put an aftermarket single din stereo in one of these? I'm sure I could modify that plate to fit?

you can cut the plate this way the face plate can still screw on.

From the look of the pics, somebody ripped out the radio and heater controls. The dash is damaged where the mounts are supposed to be.You should have the same mounts on the right that you have on the left. The lighter does not have a bracket. It is two pieces of metal screwed together. You just poke the wires through the whole in the dash, twist the metal pieces apart and stick them through the faceplate and screw them back together. In order to cover that damage you may need to use the '86 or newer style faceplate, and a different style radio and bracket.I hate to say it,but unless you can fab up some kind of bracket to mount your radio and controls you may have to change the whole dash.It happened to me in the past when somebody stole my radio, good luck.

I have to agree with jsiler...it looks like someone has damaged the dash...here's a pic of a dash I have and how it should look..

as mentioned the top 4 holes are for mounting the HVAC control...the larger hole is where the lighter fits through. The lower holes... someone had clips on this one..... hold the metal radio bracket pictured by Turna.

is that the only bracket they ever made to hold radios in these cars?if one doesn't use the two knob style you just have to mod that bracket to work?

Re: What am I missing? 79 Malibu HVAC, stereo and lighter m

I think the bracket shown above will work for 78-85.From 86-88 the radio was larger and the brackets were bolted to the side of the radio and then bolted to the same mounting holes in the dash as the earlier years and the faceplate is larger.I'm pretty sure those were the only two types made for these cars. Not to sure about aftermarket.Any aftermarket that i remember seeing would secure to the faceplate only, then you screw the faceplate the original faceplate mounting screws.

O.D. Thanks for that picture, it helps me a ton. I wondered about the right side lower being ripped up. I just figured there was some sort of bracket that I was missing; I wish I was right about that one.

It's really unfortunate that this dash is ripped like that, it's perfect otherwise. I've got some ideas but this will probably have to go on the back burner for now. I'm going to work on making a plate that will take up the mount for the stereo and the lighter. When I get back to this, I'll update this post.

Thanks for the help guys, I really apperciate it.
