8.5 vs. 9"

So I'm building a G body and have a stock 8.5" axle. My engine combination should make about 900 hp to the tires, car should go mid 9's. I currently have a stock 87 8.5" so my question is should I build it (weld on new housing ends, 33 spline axles, new posi) or sell it and build a 9"? Car will be a true street car so it must have a posi, no spool.

Please let me know what your thoughts are.

If you're basically starting with a bare housing, and buying everything to go in the 8.5" anyway, I'd probably sell the housing and put the money toward a 9". I'd want the beefiest of everything I could get if I were running that kind of HP, and you'll have more option for heavier duty pieces for the 9". You'll have NO problem selling the 8.5" housing.

I like the 8.5 however at that power level i'm sure you will want the 9". You might even want a fabricated style 9". The 8.5 is worth good money as it is. I wouldn't sink a bunch of race parts into it.

That's a lot of power and has the capability of 8's. I would go 9 in and not stock pieces. Consider a back brace, 35 + axles, bolt through housing, daytona pinon, and good gears.

Thanks guys, I believe you just reinforced my original plan to sell the 8.5 and build a 9". The 8.5 is all original and is in excellent shape.
