i tried to install a caprice lt1 starter in my monte carlo last night. the block is from a 1980 the starter is too far away from flywheel. all the research i did it said it would work any ideas
I know some/most of the aftermarket mini gear reduction starters require shimming,,,by adding a shim or 2 to the mounting surface at the block and adding the shims between the starter block and the starter body. The Bendix gear on the starter should mesh with the flywheel and have 1/8th" clearance between them, I have used a paper clip to check it. The Bendix gear should only contacts the flywheel teeth 1/2 to 2/3rds the thickness of the flywheel teeth. I'm pretty sure the clearances are the same with the aftermarket starter and the "factory" style you have. sounds like you may have to shim it if it is grinding.....maybe search you-tube or the inter-web for a video??
Do have a "Ford" style solenoid feediing the starter? I put a LT1 starter on my car and it was grinding bad. No amount of shimming would fix it even tried half shims...found out that those starters need constant power or the bendix doesn't retract all the way and causes grinding. I ditched the "Ford" solenoid and problem solved.
