i got some gauges in the bu that were never hookes up and instead of a volt gauge its ams...how do you read it and wich is better amps or volts gauges

A voltage gauge tells you how much voltage your charging system is putting out, but it doesn't indicate load. It's the safest electrical gauge you can have in terms of potential for fire. An amperage gauge shows you the actual load (current draw) on the charging system, but the wiring must be large enough to carry the entire load of your electrical system, so there's a much larger hazard of failure if it's not properly done.
