1LE brakes

Those tubular A-arms up there look real nice. One of the car magazines ran an article a few years ago about putting Camaro 12" disc brake rotors from the 1LE suspension package on our favorite body style. Something about finding a certain year(s) Caprice, and getting the upper A-arm and spindle. The rotor on this car is 12", but has a 5-on-5" bolt circle. If I remember right, the 1LE rotor bolts on the Caprice spindle, and gives the right BC. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

12"

78-90 full size caprice / impala wagons with the 12" rotors. Use only the spindle, use the 1LE rotors and a caliper from a 78-81 camaro, and your choice of global west arms, Freeyellow or Hotchkiss arms. Those aren't the only players...just a few.

upper arms

If I don't want the expense of the tubular A-arms, which stock upper arm works, tha one from the Caprice? A guy can get the A-arms and the spindles from a salvage yard, and buy the rest at a chain store, one piece at a time. I'm working with small money here.

Here ya go:

Spindles and calipers are from 78-90 12" rotor (not 11") full size Caprice, Caddy, Delta 88, and Pontiac. Typically wagon or HD towing package.

Brake calipers, (1)#18-4021, (1)#18-4020

Brake flex hoses, #BH36848

Brake caliper hose bolts, #483-205

Brake pads, # D52

Brake rotors, 1LE, #5994

Wheel bearings, 1LE inner, #BR6

Wheel bearings, 1LE outer, #BR3

Bearing seals, 1LE, #19753

Hub grease caps, 1LE, #13977

If you're tearing down the steering too, here's the part #s:

Tie rod, inner, 78 Malibu, #ES2034L

Tie rod, outer, 78 Malibu, #ES2033R

Centerlink, 78 Malibu, #DS909

Idler arm, 78 Malibu, #FA1013

Ball joint, lower, 78 Malibu, #FA3000

The tubular upper A-arms required should have ball joints already installed. My preference is the Global West conversion arms for 12" brakes, but Hotchkiss makes them, too.

thanks

:D Thanks, guys. Maybe tubular arms could come later. I have the parts from a '83 Z28 rear disc set up. I'm trying to use all factory parts.

Only the tubular uppers will work properly. The geometry isn't right with B-body uppers. The shim stack you would need would be taller than the A-arm mount studs.

That and the distance between the cross shaft bolts are 7.25" for a B-body vs. G-body's 6.5" distance-too much fabbing-not worth it. Buy good aftermarket uppers. -Jabin
