hey guys, im building a pump gas 468 with brodix BB-2 heads. lunati crank, h beams, probe dome srs piston. my CR should be around 11.5 to 1. this will be a street strip motor, but will see limited street miles (not going too far from home, just take out once in a wile to melt the tires off and race a few imports lol) other than that i will be racing it. the motor is set up for a solid roller with about a .700 max lift. i am thinking of a cam with about 260@ .050 on the intake and 270@.050 on the exhaust and anywhere from a .650-.700 lift. and as of right now, this motor wont be sprayed. so im thinking of a lobe sep. of 108-110. 108 will be a bit more radical on the street, but the torque should come up fast and hard. 110 will be a bit more streetable, and probably run on pump gas a bit better.

anyone have any input (other than call comp cams lol) of where to go as far as lobe sep, or even any other input?

thanx

If you are looking for it to be right, then call Chris Straub. 423 391 7774

If you have an idea of what you want and close is ok, then you can use the catalogs. For my Chevelle, I called Chris. For the Nova, it was a fun street car, so down a few hp isn't going to hurt it.

Although I havent bought a cam from Chris Straub,he does have an excellent reputation. But I did buy a custom ground solid roller last rebuild from UDHarold Brookshire, and he delivered exactly what I asked for. After this experience,I will never buy an off the shelf grind again, for almost the same price you can speak to someone knoweledegble in the art of making camshafts, and get exactly what you want.

You have enough in that motor you can spring the few extra tens of dollars to get a custom grind. You're at a level where the right cam could be 40HP difference from one that's "pretty close". Plus when you're talking about a roller they can give you pretty much anything you want- just depends how bad you want to beat up the valve springs.

Go on. Give yourself permission to splurge on this one just a bit. I'm all about budget, but in this case the extra bucks aren't going to be much compared to the overall project cost and the power potential it could yield. Which means it IS a budget choice if you look at it from that perspective.

Oh, and I forgot to mention..... please report back what they recommend. I'd be interested to know how far the final specs are from what you were thinking about.

i was looking at all the off the shelf cams and im not happy with any of them, except for howards. they seem to have a good selection. plus my machine shop has had it with comp cams, not too happy with them. and lunati screwed me on one of their cranks so im not going with them. but other than that i was going to call up UD or billit. i just thought maybe one of you guys had a close combo to mine and would have a quick answer, but i guess theres never a quick answer with cams.

i also was thinking if i get a off the shelf cam, i would go slightly bigger than what i wanted, to bleed off some cylinder pressure, make it more pump gas friendly. the car has 4.56 gears and once i have the converter made for it, in the end, its all matched up right, should work out fine ether way.....

No matter which cam you choose,be sure to get a set of top quality valve springs that are matched to your cam specs.PAC,PSI & Isky are all top name manufacturers of springs. If you do call Chris Straub,he can advise on what parts to use.

i have a set of crower lifters. probably going to run about a 4800-5100 stall in the car with a 4.56 gear. havent put it together yet though. whats the duration on yours?

mine is a bullet solid roller- gross lift .722/.697 and duration at .50 is 251/262. the lobe separation is 112 and bullet recommends .025 and .027 hot lash on the valves. also have bullets offset lifters and Trend's dbl taper pushrods. for all 16 i think they were under $150 shipped! Talk to Scott in the Tech department, that guy knows his stuff for sure.

nice. i went a little big on my pistons and ordered a 39.00 cc dome piston from probe. they claim it will be 11.5 to 1 with my heads but looking at the dome...its friggin huge! so i thing its going to tske a huge cam with a wide lobe sep. to get this thing to run on pump gas.....but we'll see!
