I need to purchase a mechanical fan for the 350/330 crate motor that I bought for my wagon. It has the GM serpentine setup that I havent put on yet.

Can anyone tell me if its reverse or regular rotation ?

I'm afraid i can't answer this for ya but i think this is more of a water pump question,so if you're using the one that came with the motor you need to see which direction it spun originally just in case if you've replaced it with a different one.

is the water pump pulley smooth or grooved?
Smooth is reverse rotation.

Yes, it came with everything. I bought this motor from my local dealer. Cheaper price and had it in 3 days.

The serpentine setup uses a reverse rotation water pump and the fans blades are aimed towards the motor. the v belt setup water pump is standard rotation and fan blades are aimed away from motor

I used a clutch fan off a tbi 4.3 S10, fits inside the stock Malibu shroud just fine.

I don't follow you. Regardless of rotation, the fan always pulls air from the grill through the radiator. It never pushes it from the engine bay, through the radiator out the grill.

The pitch of the blades is simply reversed.

The water pump is reverse rotation so you need a reverse rotation fan AND clutch. Period. No mixie-matchie. You need both.

Also note, GM used a DIFFERENT thread on the bolt holes for a reverse-rotation water pump than a standard rotation water pump. On a typical v-belt (standard rotation) water pump the threads are SAE. On a reverse rotation water pump they are metric threads. This is GM's subtle way of saying "everything from here forward needs to be different".

NO, flipping the fan around backwards from a V-belt setup with NOT make it work in reverse rotation. It will merely make it work slightly more efficiently to push air out the front of the car- the opposite direction you want it to go.

Think about it this way: Left hand thread bolts can NEVER be interchanged with right hand thread bolts. It doesn't matter if you screw it in from the front side or the back side, the thread is pitched the opposite way no matter which way you turn it. Same goes for the fan, which is basically and "air screw". It will move air only in one direction, no matter which way you flip it around on the shaft. It's just that it will be more efficient in one orientation because the curvature of the blades will be correct. In the other orientation it will STILL try to move air in that same direction, it's just that the curvature of the blades will be inefficient moving air that way.

FAN AND CLUTCH must be designed to work with a reverse-rotation pump.

Or your could install electric fans and ignore all of this. <----- hint: this usually the right answer
