On the 78 where top bolt holds the front fender, there is body filler around the plate with the bolt hole. What is filler placed there for? What is the harm in removing it on the bottom?

Believe that is seam sealer to divert rain from getting in the seam and rotting it out/corrosion

Thanks. The fenders I purchase won't fit the bottom edge of the top bracket curls in and hits the filler on the bottom of the plate. I'll have to grind the metal on the fender or remove the sealer. Or a little bit of both.

I'm trying to return these aftermarket fenders due to factory defects. I purchased another set from a different merchant.
