Is there any need to replace the valve springs on an otherwise completely stock engine if switching to roller tip rockers with the increased 1.6 ratio? My brother gave me the idea about my motor in the wagon. The whole TPI setup is from a 1986 Camaro/Firebird, but the computer is 1990-1992. So, the setup is designed to run with a mildly-more aggressive cam, and by looking up the cam specs on both a 1979 Malibu 305, and the Camaro/bird, I can get there with just the ratio change. Should wake the engine up quite a bit. Much faster/easier than a cam swap!

1979 Malibu 305 stock cam specs (lift) IN: .373 EX: .400
1986 Camaro 305 TPI cam specs IN: .404 EX: .414
1979 Malibu 305 W/1.6 rockers IN: .397 EX: .423

After 1987's roller cam changes, the specs are obviously more aggressive. A roller conversion isn't feasible, so that's why I chose the 1986 cam specs. I'm thinking for the 100 or so dollars, it would be a fun little project!

I put them in already, but haven't started the car yet. I got the 1.52 ratio Comp Cams Magnums, and Trick Flow chromemoly pushrods. Been working so much, I haven't had a chance to get it running. Tuesday is the day!!

How'd it go? I would've said 1.6 as well, there probably wouldn't be a large enough difference to affect your fuel/idle requirements so the computer would've been fine. I'm still using stock stamped 1.5 rockers and stock lifters/pushrods on the 383 in my truck.

On a tuning note, if you decide to go further via step-by-step with the 305, check out the EBL. I'm running it on the 383 in the truck, and it will do a lot while using the stock harness, fuel system, etc.

http://www.dynamicefi.com/EBL_P4_Flash.php I believe that is direct for TPI... most any of the EBL boards will run most anything, but a couple of them are application specific... I believe P4 is for F-Body/Corvette TPI, SFI-6 is the turbo 3.8 cars (GN, T-Type, TTA), and the regular EBL is for everything TBI and up. You can flash via a USB-serial adapter with a laptop like the newer stuff, though it isn't exactly OBD2.

I've been super busy at work/home and haven't yet finished the wagon. UGH! As soon as I get a day off, something else pops up and takes me away from her. At least I have this weekend off, and so help me, I WILL DRIVE IT!

As a side note, Doober, I'm not going to invest much more time/effort into the TPI engine. I do like it very much, but my lust for power took over and it's getting my "still new" LQ9 LS engine along with my TCI 6X trans. I have all the swap stuff already, don't tell the wife! I think 525HP and 6 speeds ought to do it for me

Sounds good... I'll probably do something similar with the Fiero... the 3400 that was in the SUVs, vans, and cars in the early/mid 2000s. My aunt has a rotting '03 or '04 Aztek with something like 215,000 on it. She was going to donate it but offered it to me, I plan on using it for the engine/harness/PCM... it's good for a solid 50hp over the original 2.8, so a good 25% power increase  I originally was thinking of attempting some sort of turbo or cam/head build with it, but may just leave it as is with a stock 3400 (may do a 3500 intake/head swap, those are fairly common on the 3400s), I still have the Porsche to decide what to do... I'm considering getting it to driving status (pack rat damage, etc.), then selling it or trading for a turbo Z31 300ZX.
