In a 79 Malibu can you easily convert to a 4 speed and use any old gm transmission or do you have to use the factory set up with a trans and bellhousing that was used in the g body 4 speeds?
I have a lakewood bellhousing and a hayes flywheel that I would like to use and find me a trans. It is a th350 now.

Just about any, if not all 3 or 4 speed Muncie's or Saginaw's will fit into the Malibu without doing anything major to the car.

Hardest part with be cutting the floor board in the correct spot.

I'm not sure if your bellhousing has a provision for it, but the ballstud on the G-Body bellhousings was (I'm guessing here) about 3/4" below the 'normal' ballstud for the clutch fork. You also need a G-Body-specific clutch fork. I also agree with what Turna says.

For a bellhousing/fork, you could also check into the info at t5montecarlo's site:
