has anyone ever installed a weiand 144 series or similar blower on a 80 malibu? Will it fit under a small cowl hood? Is it worth the money?

Pretty sure you would need a 4" cowl to fit it under

I've got the slightly taller 142 design under a Harwood 2-1/2" hood, but man it's tight getting a reasonable air cleaner setup to fit. The 144 sits the carb about 1/2" lower than the 142, so it would fit better under a small cowl hood like what I've got.
