I just put a M-20 in my 80 Malibu. It works fine but when you let off the gas and are coasting in any gear there is a ratteling type noise that sounds like it is coming from the tail housing area. It is not consistent sometimes more than other times. Sounds like maybe something is loose. No other symptoms just the noise. Any suggestions as I start my search ?

Probably something that tightens up under load like a bad bearing, slider shaft or tail shaft bushing. It's hard to say without hearing it or better yet, opening the transmission up for inspection.

have you ruled out the linkage? Do you have spring loaded clips and/or washers to take up the slop between the clip and the arm?

What is the condition of the speedometer driven gear? Can you look inside and see the condition of the drive gear (may be metal?). Does the speedometer bounce?

Once you have ruled out everything external, and it still bothers you, I agree with Tommy that you will have to open it up and examine the insides.
