Fuel tank on 79 cutlass

Im finally getting back on my cutlass after it being in storage for a few yrs. Im replacing the fuel tank and with the new fuel tank im have problems getting the factory tank straps to work when I try to bolt them up I cant get the bolts to go in. Its like the straps are to short, any help would be appreciated.

This sounds like what I just went through this with my 79 wagon. The wagon tanks are different but I bought a tank from rock auto. My problem was simple, the hose clamps I used I had positioned wrong and they were hitting the body of the car. Does your tank look identical to the original?
