Only the old 65-81 Olds & Pontiac 8.5" Rears used 31-spline Carriers/Axles, so be careful what you're getting, not a lot of parts available for those oddballs.

Grand Nat's came with 28-spline Axles/Carriers.
Most 8.5" changed to 30-Spline in 88/89, these Carriers/Axles will fit the older 70-87 8.5" that came with 28-spline Carriers/Axles.

You can get 33-spline Spools/Axles & some Posi Carriers.

There have been several 8.5"s for sale on this site last few weeks.

Direct bolt in rear. You do need the DS/DriveShaft or shorten your 7.5" DS by 1".
I doubt you'll find any in a Salvage Yard.
Last time I saw one in a yard was a few years ago, one I'd worked at years previous to that. They had $900 listed on Car-Part.com, and wouldn't want to budge, even when I told them maybe if it had been rebuilt and was all new inside. I just rolled my eyes and left... it was one of those money-hungry yards.

I called the guy at the rear end shop and he said he would let it go for 700.00 with factory axles. however, it doesnt have any brakes except the back plate. Are the 1980 malibu's and the 87 grand national 373 rear end the same drum style? if so that would be great, i would save 120.00 because my 7.5 has all new brakes all the way around. with a new yoke, 1" driveshaft cut and ujoints, it will cost 120.00 i think im going to do the swap. i just want to make sure the brakes are the same?

The usual is 1" shorter but, you should measure your DS to be sure.
Check with your Shop to be sure how they measure, there're a few different ways.
