lq9 is the silverado ss and caddy motor, and newer Vortech MAX option basic truck and suv engine is the lq4, look for head # 317 on the outer edge, under the front of the valcover, I know the 317 is up to 2005, not sure if the newer stuff is the same

so are the (317'S)good flowing heads and also i know you can buy the lq9's pretty cheap bare from the dealer but i wonder if the valve size is the same on the 317's to swap parts

LQ4 and LQ9 use the same heads. They flow very very similar to LS2/LS6 spec heads (casting number 243) but have a larger chamber.

The LQ4 is the most common setup. I'm picking up a '05 LQ4 with 40k miles and all accessories Friday for $1350 with a 90 day warantee. The LQ9s can be found but expect to pay for it.

The differences between the two are the compression ratio (LQ4 is 9.4-1 while the LQ9 is 10-1). LQ4 has dished pistons while the LQ9 has flattops. Its also been said that the LQ9 may have slightly stronger rods, but I dont think thats been confirmed.
